About Us

What Is Rotary?
Rotary is an international association of clubs whose purpose is to bring together business, professional and community leaders together to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and promote international understanding, peace and goodwill around the world. Founded by Paul Harris and three of his friends on 23 February 1905, Rotary is the world’s first global service organization with a membership (July 2022 data) of over 36,900 Rotary clubs (grouped into 538 Districts: 39 in India) and about 11,370 Rotaract clubs together composed of over 1.38 million service-minded men and women in over 220 countries. In India there are 4,475 Rotary Clubs. Our own District 3131 is composed of 141 Rotary Clubs and 5329 Rotarians! Rotary clubs have sponsored Interact clubs (now over 18,400) and Rotary Community Corps (about 12,370) to further deepen their Service activities.

Let’s focus on
Rotary values diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, race, colour, abilities, religion, culture, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio- economic status and political preference. The membership of Rotary clubs is by invitation and reflects a wide cross section of local communities. Eight languages are spoken in the Rotary world. Rotarians meet weekly for fellowship to follow their first guiding principle: to develop friendship as an opportunity for Service. In their meetings they learn about many informative and interesting topics of local and global importance and discuss their service activities. These however are executed in the local and global communities exemplifying Rotary's principal motto Service above Self. The Rotarians also use the 'Four-Way Test' as a lens to see if their thoughts and actions are compatible with the spirit and ideals of Rotary.
